What is an Authentic Katana?

An authentic Katana (刀) is a traditional Japanese sword that epitomizes the rich cultural heritage and exceptional craftsmanship of Japan. These swords are created through a meticulous process that has been perfected over centuries. This process involves forging tamahagane (玉鋼) steel, which is repeatedly heated, folded, and hammered to produce a blade with a strong, layered structure. The blade is then clay-tempered to achieve a hard edge and a flexible spine, resulting in the distinctive hamon (刃文) that characterizes a genuine Katana.

Authentic Katanas are cherished not only for their superior functionality but also for their historical and artistic value. All authentic Katanas have a Jyu Token Rui Torokusho (銃刀剣類登録証), a registration certificate issued by the Agency for Cultural Affairs (文化庁), ensuring legal ownership and proper documentation. Additionally, they are often certified by renowned organizations such as the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai (NBTHK, 日本美術刀剣保存協会) and the Nihon Token Hozon Kai (NTHK, 日本刀剣保存会), which provide detailed documentation verifying the sword's authenticity, maker, and period of creation.

We collaborate with renowned Japanese "Token shops" (刀剣店) and swordsmiths (刀匠) to bring authentic Katanas to our customers. These master swordsmiths, recognized for their unparalleled skill and dedication, craft each blade with the utmost precision and care. By offering these exceptional swords, we provide our customers with not just a collectible item, but a piece of Japanese history and art. Owning an authentic Katana means preserving a part of Japan's cultural legacy and appreciating the masterful skill and dedication of the swordsmiths who created these extraordinary artifacts.

Katana Blade Types

Clay tempering gives a sword blade both flexibility and hardness, and clay tempered katana exhibits excellent durability that is inherited from high carbon steel

Folded steel blades, usually referred to as Damascus steel, are made by hammering the steel flat and folding it over repeatedly to create multiple layers of steel

Carbon steel is durable, extremely strong and shock resistant. It is one of the best blade materials, and can be easily forged, maintained and cleaned.
