Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Ishido Teruhide 石堂輝秀 NBTHK HOZON Certificate

石堂輝秀 (Ishido Teruhide), whose real name was 菊池清一 (Kikuchi Seiichi), was a skilled craftsman of the Ishido family, the 10th generation to inherit the legacy of the famous Edo period master 武蔵大掾是一 (Musashi Daijo Korekazu) and 石堂運寿是一 (Ishido Unju Korekazu). Born in 明治33年 (1900), he learned sword forging from the 9th generation 石堂秀一 (Ishido Shuuichi). During the war, he was engaged in the production of military swords and was renowned for the sharpness of his blades.

The 石堂一派 (Ishido school) shifted to tool forging in response to the 廃刀令 (Haitorei, sword abolition edict) of the Meiji period. After the war, 輝秀 (Teruhide) himself dedicated his efforts to making planes (kanna). Consequently, 石堂輝秀 (Ishido Teruhide) became well known among carpenters as a master of plane making. His planes were reputed to be worth "one million yen each," and it is said that some master carpenters enshrine Ishido Teruhide's planes alongside their household gods.

This sword features a noticeable difference between the base and the tip, with an extended boshi giving it a sharp appearance. The well-forged 小板目肌 (ko-itame hada) appears plain at first glance, but upon closer inspection, one can see the fine chikei patterns resembling the clear bottom of a pristine lake. The 刃文 (hamon) is an undulating gunome-midare with ashi, and the blade edge features fine sunagashi. The 帽子 (boshi) is also in a midare pattern on both sides and returns shortly in an o-maru style.

Before polishing, the entire blade was covered in rust. To avoid unnecessary metal loss, the sword was polished in a way that left some pockmark-like rust spots. These spots might appear prominent in the photos due to the lighting, but to the naked eye, they do not detract from the blade's beauty. Of course, these rust spots can be removed with another round of polishing.

Bare weight: 777 grams.
