Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Hizen Kunihiro 肥前國廣 NBTHK HOZON TŌKEN Certificate

肥前國廣 (Hizen Kunihiro) was the half-brother of the first generation 忠吉 (Tadayoshi) and the eldest son of 相右衛門廣貞 (Sosukeemon Hirotaka), who was also his mentor. He was known as Hashimoto Rokurozaemon and was one of the representative swordsmiths of Waki-Hizen. His works bear inscriptions from the Kan'ei to the Manji eras, and he lived to the age of eighty-five.

This lineage was known for their skill in creating midareba (irregular hamon), and particularly 國廣 (Kunihiro) was adept at producing intense midareba like 廣貞 (Hirotaka). Compared to his younger brother 播磨大掾忠國 (Harima Daijo Tadakuni) (first generation), his works are extremely rare and highly valued for their superior craftsmanship.

Historically, his swords have been renowned for their sharpness and are listed as high-quality items in the Edo period book "Kokon Kaji Biko." The Kunihiro listed in the "Yamada Asaemon Oshigata" is noted with the comment "Wakige no atari, otosu beshi" (around the armpit, it can cut).

This piece has a robust width and thickness with a shallow curvature, a slightly extended tip, and features a well-forged, tightly-grained ko-itame hada with gunome-choji hamon. It has prominent ashi, visible sunagashi in the ha, and a bright nioiguchi with a well-forged nie. The sword fully showcases the skill of Waki-Hizen and its excellent provenance is evidenced by its registration as a Daimyo sword in Showa 26 (1951).

This is an ubu-dashi (unshortened) sword. It has some light rust in places as it has been neglected for a long time after the previous owner passed away. Therefore, it is offered at a price that considers the cost of polishing. With its solid width and thickness and a blade length of over 2 shaku 4 sun, this sword is attractive both as a display piece and for iai kata practice. Take this opportunity to acquire this rare and valuable Kunihiro, which has few surviving examples.
We recommend owning it together with Wakizashi 554 (Hizen Saga ju Kunihiro) as a daisho set.

Bare weight: 832 grams.
