Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Gyokushinsai Masakage 玉心斎正蔭 NBTHK HOZON TOKEN Certificate

Masa Kage, whose real name was Gotou Koisuke, was born in Toyama, Etchu Province, and went by the art name Gyokushinsai. He initially became a disciple of Suzuki Masao and later studied swordsmithing under Suishinshi Masatsugu. He resided in Takada, Echigo Province, and was known for producing swords with an excellent gunome-midare, characteristic of the Yamaura school.

This sword, with its sharp design featuring a slightly worn fukura, showcases a kitae of ko-itame hada with masame flowing grain, and displays utsuri. The hamon is a bright and clear sakasa-gunome, with well-defined ashi entering the blade and sunagashi intertwined with the steel, presenting a vigorous appearance typical of the Yamaura school. The koshirae accompanying this blade is of high quality, adorned with fittings depicting scenes from the Genpei War, further enhancing the sword's value.

It is likely that the sword originally bore a signature, but being a work of the Yamaura school, it may have been rendered mumei (unsigned) to pass as a work of the renowned Kiyomaro. Although there are some patches of light rust, there are no notable flaws or defects, making this a piece worthy of proper polishing and preservation for future generations. This sword, with its vibrant spirit and high-quality koshirae, is an exemplary work of the Yamaura Kiyomaro school and a coveted item for sword enthusiasts. Don’t miss the opportunity to acquire this masterpiece.

Bare weight: 695 grams. Weight with koshirae: 1,000 grams.
