Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Yoshiie 吉家 NBTHK HOZON TOKEN Certificate

Consulting the sword register, the name 吉家 (Yoshii) can be seen in the 加賀国 (Kaga Province) around the 天文 (Tenbun) period in the latter part of the 室町時代 (Muromachi era). Although not many works are attributed to this name, and detailed records are scarce.

This sword exhibits a combination of tachi and katana style, with a curvature beginning above the waist, known as saki-zori. The overall appearance exudes elegance. The steel features a well-forged mokume hada with ji-nie and some utsuri. The hamon is a tight suguha, with a soft nioiguchi near the base, transitioning to a tighter nioiguchi towards the tip. The blade showcases fine activities extending from the edge into the ji, including kinsuji and sunagashi. The boshi is straight with a rounded return on both sides.

The Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai (NBTHK) has attributed this sword to the Den Kashu school, and based on their judgment, the period is described accordingly. However, from my perspective, it seems possible that the sword might be from an earlier period.

The accompanying koshirae is adorned with intricate details, featuring a black ishime finish with thin black lacquered hirumaki wrapping and raindrop patterns. The fittings, made of shakudo, are embellished with fine nanako work and designs of chrysanthemums and other flowers. The fuchi-kashira are finely detailed with nanako and gold inlay of sayagata patterns. The menuki are exquisite gold pieces depicting plum blossoms, armor sleeves, and arrows. The koshirae alone is a noteworthy piece.

When unsheathed, the sword feels well-balanced with the center of gravity towards the hand, making it feel exceptionally light. The handle shows no looseness, though the sword is intended purely for artistic appreciation rather than iai or practical use. It is a piece to be cherished for its aesthetic value.

The sword was initially registered in Showa 26 (1951) as a daimyo-registered sword with a young registration number of 1096. Although it was re-registered in Heisei 26 (2014) without a specific prefecture noted on the old certificate, its provenance speaks volumes about its quality.

Bare weight: 613 grams.
Weight with koshirae and without saya: 882 grams.
