Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Bishu Osafune Sukesada 備州長船祐定 NBTHK HOZON TŌKEN Certificate

Among the swordsmiths of the late Muromachi period, known as Sue-Bizen, many swords were signed with the name 祐定 (Sukesada). Among these, swords made by 与三左衛門尉 (Yozzaemonjo), 源兵衛尉 (Genbejo), and 彦兵衛尉 (Hikoheijo) are famous. During the Sengoku period, when there was a high demand for swords, many Bizen swords were forged for numerous battles. There is a negative practice in the sword world of belittling Sue-Bizen swords without a common name, calling them mass-produced and inferior. However, these were not crudely made. In fact, many of these unsigned works show remarkable craftsmanship, with some even being of a quality that could be attributed to a specific swordsmith.

This sword, with its Mokume-hada flowing into Masame, showing a faint Utsuri and a Hamon of Gunome, exemplifies the typical style of Sue-Bizen. It is a newly unearthed piece from an old family in Osaka. The sword was initially covered with a light rust, but at our shop, it underwent high-grade polishing, the addition of a Shirasaya, silver Habaki, silver Seppa, Koshirae repairs, and preservation sword appraisal, among other processes. Considering these costs, the price may seem high, but if an individual were to undertake the same procedures, it would easily exceed 400,000 yen. Taking that into account, this sword is a great bargain. This well-crafted and dated Sukesada, which requires no further work, is a must-have.

During the Greater East Asia War, this family heirloom Sukesada was carried as a military sword, and a Sarute ring was attached near the Kashira. The leather cover for field use was removed at our shop, and all damaged areas were repaired with domestic lacquer. The polishing was done by a master polisher who has won awards at competitions hosted by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai.

Bare weight: 735 grams. Weight when sheathed: 1,078 grams.
