Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Bishu Osafune Sukesada  備州長船祐定 NBTHK  HOZON TOKEN Certificate

祐定 is one of the most renowned Bizen Osafune swordsmiths representing the late Muromachi period, alongside Katsumitsu and Kiyomitsu. Notable smiths in this lineage include Yosazaemon, Hikozaemon, Genbei, Genzaemon, Hikobei, and Gorozaemon, all of whom are celebrated for their exceptional craftsmanship.

This sword retains an elegant shape with a pronounced difference in width from base to tip. It features a forward curvature starting from above the base, a characteristic known as saki-zori. The jigane (steel surface) is well-forged with a prominent mokume pattern, and it includes chikei. The hamon (tempered edge) is in a wavy pattern with gunome, incorporating ashi and sunagashi, along with occasional small choji. The boshi (tip) shows a chaotic pattern on both sides, ending in a rounded return. Despite lacking an inscribed common name, the sword is well-preserved and free from significant forging flaws.

The accompanying koshirae (mountings) is in excellent preservation. Although the tsuka (handle) shows minor looseness, this can be easily fixed by rewrapping the tsuka-ito (handle wrapping) or adding shims. The slight tsuba rattling is minimal and does not require additional seki-gane. This piece comes with a Hozon Tosogu Kanteisho (certificate for the preservation of sword fittings), ensuring its lasting value and enjoyment.

Bare weight: 682 grams
Weight with koshirae: 986 grams
