Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Ashu Fujiwara Sadashige 阿州藤原貞重 NBTHK HOZON TŌKEN Certificate

Although the name 貞重 from 阿州 does not appear in the sword register at hand, it is likely a local smith not recorded in the register. If anyone has information about this smith, please enlighten us.

This sword has a shallow curvature and, in its current polished state, shows minimal difference in width between the base and the tip, with a medium-length point. The forging pattern is well-executed and tight with visible chikei, and the shinogi-ji exhibits a strong masame grain. The hamon is in a mid-sized suguha style with frequent small ashi entering, forming small irregularities and showing kinsuji along the edge. The boshi on the front side rises up and on the back side is straight and rounded at the tip.

There are forging flaws near the shinogi-ji and mune around the monouchi area on the front side. Despite these flaws, the sword balances well with a comfortable hand-feel and ease of use, making it a rare piece of significant value despite being unrecorded in the register.

Bare weight: 710 grams.
