Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Hakushu Kurayoshi junin Harima daijo Fujiwara Masatsuna(2nd Gen)伯州倉吉住人播磨大掾藤原正綱(二代) NBTHK TOKUBETSU HOZON TOKEN Certificate

Masatsuna was a swordsmith who worked in Tottori Prefecture, Kurayoshi City, in the Kaji-machi district. He was a member of the Hiroga school, which originated from Yuge (under the Komon clan's Iwakura Castle) in the same city and continued for three generations. Existing works are dated to the first year of Genna (1615) and the ninth year of Kan'ei (1632).
His works are rare, and a piece held by Chosei Shrine is designated as a protected cultural property of Tottori Prefecture.
His signatures include Bōki no Kuni Kurayoshi Junin Harima no Daijo Fujiwara Masatsuna, Bōki no Kuni Kurayoshi Junin Masatsuna, Bōki no Kuni Kurayoshi Junin Fujiwara Masatsuna, Bōki no Kuni Kurayoshi Junin Yuge Masatsuna Saku, Bōki no Kuni Kurayoshi Junin Yuge Shinzaburo Masatsuna, and Bōki no Kuni Kikushima Junin Yuge Shinzaburo Masatsuna.

This sword has an ubu-nakago (original tang), but it has been shortened by about one finger length. It has a shinogi-zukuri (ridgeline) structure, with a width that does not significantly taper from the base to the tip, giving it a grand and imposing appearance. Overall, it exudes strength.
The kitae (forging pattern) is well-forged and tight, with flowing ko-itame hada and attached ji-nie, giving it a refined appearance. The hamon is a bright and clear gunome-midare with frequent ashi, incorporating some choji-like gunome, and the habuchi displays sunagashi and kinsuji. The boshi on the omote side shows slight midare above the yokote and ends in a ko-maru, while on the ura side, it includes slight notare above the yokote and sweeps back in a round shape. Given that this sword was registered as a daimyo's sword in May of Showa 26 (1951), it attests to its well-preserved lineage.

Bare weight: 766 grams.
