Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Kanezumi 兼住 NBTHK HOZON TŌKEN Certificate

This is a work by 兼住 (Kanezumi) who was active in 関 (Seki) during the Kan'ei period of the early Edo era. The sword features a shallow curvature with a notable difference in width between the base and tip, displaying a progressive transition to the Kanbun Shinto style. Despite being shortened by about an inch, it retains a solid and imposing signature. The steel is well-forged with a strong masame in the mokume hada, and features ji-nie and occasional areas of prominent grain. The hamon is a bright and clear suguha, with the blade edge appearing to be enveloped by evenly sized ko-nie. The boshi is straight with a rounded return.

When held, the sword feels lightweight and balanced towards the hand, making one-handed operation easy. The tang bears the Shiga Prefecture stamp on the reverse side, indicating its historical management and documentation value since the Meiji period.

  • There is an embedded iron piece on the front of the tang.

The accompanying koshirae was newly made with great attention to detail by an enthusiast. The fuchi-gashira and tsuba feature a wave and plover design, with the tsuba signed 江府住利政 (Gofu ju Toshimasa). The saya is robustly lacquered with a black stone texture, and the seppa are crafted with a stylish bamboo joint pattern. Naturally, there is no looseness in the hilt, making it an enjoyable piece both internally and externally.

Bare weight: 646 grams. Weight with koshirae and without saya: 889 grams.
