Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Ecchu no kami Fujiwara Kanekuni  越中守藤原包國 NBTHK HOZON TŌKEN Certificate

The artisan Tsutsui Hisazemon, also known as Kanekuni, is a well-known figure who studied under the first-generation Tanba no Kami Yoshimichi and is also the father of Tsutsui Kinmitsu. Renowned for its cutting performance, his works are classified as "Wazamono" and belong to the Yamato Tegai school of swordsmiths.

The blade features a noticeable difference in width from the base to the tip, with a moderately extended middle tip and a shallow curvature, indicating a Kanbun Shinto style. The jigane (steel surface) shows a mix of masame and itame, well-forged and densely packed with occasional large grain. The hamon (temper line) is a bright and clear choji-midare mixed with gunome, with well-entered ashi (legs), prominent sunagashi (sandy lines), kinsuji (bright lines), inazuma (lightning), and tobiyaki (jumping flames), and the edge is surrounded by abundant small nie (martensite crystals). The boshi (tip of the hamon) turns sharply with a rounded return. The nakago (tang) is in excellent condition, making this an exemplary piece for art appreciation.

Many notable swords of this length, just under two shaku and two sun, were favored by high-ranking samurai and daimyo. This particular sword, fitted with an Edo-period gold-plated habaki, indicates it was once owned by a significant noble.

Bare blade weight: 625 grams.
