Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Signed by Fujiwara Akifusa 藤原秋房於江府作之 NBTHK HOZON TŌKEN Certificate

Upon consulting the sword registry, there are two swordsmiths named 秋房 (Akifusa) in 上州 (Joshu) who used the surname 源 (Minamoto). However, given the 80-year difference between the active periods of these smiths and the date inscribed on this sword, it is likely they are different individuals. This 秋房 (Akifusa) might be an unrecorded swordsmith. If anyone has information about this particular 秋房 (Akifusa), please share it with us.

The blade has a prominent difference in width between the base and the tip, with a slightly extended kissaki. It features a high curvature (sori) starting from above the hilt, giving it an elegant appearance while still conveying sharpness. The jihada is well-forged with a dense mokume pattern, thick layers of ji-nie, and chikei. The hamon is a gentle gunome-midare with ashi and prominent sunagashi. The boshi is rounded with a maru return on both sides.

Currently, there is some light rust on the blade, but it does not hinder appreciation. The balance is comfortable with the center of gravity near the hilt, making it easy to handle.

The sword was registered in 東京都 (Tokyo) in February 1951, indicating that it was in the possession of a prominent family at that time.
*Note: This sword comes with a certificate from the 銃砲刀剣研究会 (Gun and Sword Research Association) attributing it to 上州秋房 (Joshu Akifusa). However, due to the aforementioned differences in period, we consider it to be a different 秋房 (Akifusa).

Bare weight: 644 grams.
