Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Nakayama Yoshimichi 中山義通 NBTHK HOZON TOKEN Certificate

Ikkansai Nakayama Yoshimichi, the adopted son of Ikkansai Yoshihiro, renowned for his forging style, was a swordsmith active around the Tenpō period in the late Edo era. His father, Yoshihiro, learned the forging technique of creating distinctive hada (grain) from the descendants of Etchu Norishige, mastering a unique method that makes chikei (dark lines) stand out. Yoshimichi also acquired this forging method, characterized by its prominent jigane (steel surface).

This sword features a deep curvature, blending the characteristics of both tachi and katana. Despite some minor flaws, it showcases a vibrant hamon of gunome-choji midare. The intricate activity within the blade, intertwining with the jigane, makes it an enjoyable piece for art appreciation. Additionally, the cosmetic work below the shinogi area, which can be considered the polisher's signature, is of a rare matsukawahada style, unlike the more common multiple-line designs or inscribed names, adding to its intrigue.

*Note: The hato-me on the back side of the shirasaya is missing.*

The accompanying koshirae was crafted under the supervision of our shop owner, Machii Isao, a renowned iaijutsu practitioner both domestically and internationally. The fittings are unified with a kagome pattern, chosen to reflect the superior cutting ability, akin to the saying "kago-tsurube that doesn't hold water." The seppa are handmade by a silversmith specifically for this sword, fulfilling their primary role of securing the tsuba. The handle is luxuriously wrapped in a single piece of high-quality samegawa (ray skin) and wrapped with genuine silk thread.

This sword not only serves as a piece of art for appreciation but also stands as a reliable companion for martial arts training. Don't miss the opportunity to acquire this sword with koshirae supervised by Machii Isao.

Bare weight: 848 grams.
