Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Fujiwara Takada 藤原高田 NBTHK HOZON TOKEN Certificate

The Toyosu Takada school is a group of swordsmiths that flourished in the Takada area of Bungo Province (present-day Tsurusaki near Oita City). Swords made during the Koto period often bear the name Taira, hence they are called Taira Takada. From the Shinto period onwards, they started using the name Fujiwara, and thus they are generally known as Fujiwara Takada. This school has long been esteemed for its practical swords, which were favored by many warriors.

This sword has been significantly shortened and is now unsigned, but its extended tip conveys a sense of sharpness. The tightly forged mokume hada and bright, clear suguha with ko-nie are notable features. There are no significant forging flaws, and although it is a beautiful work, there is a repair visible just below the yokote, suggesting a weak temper at the boshi.

The koshirae (mounting) was heavily damaged, with missing fittings, so we crafted a new handle. Naturally, it features a samegawa (rayskin) wrap with large nodes, covered in dark green uragawa (inner leather). Although the kozuka and kogai are modern, they complement the overall look, making it perfect for display in a tokonoma (alcove). *Please note that the kogatana (small blade) is not included.

The tsuba (handguard), made by Kiyonai of Echizen, is signed and features kozuka and kogai slots, along with a kashira for formal samurai use. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire this piece. The tsuba has been fitted with a sekigane (fitting adjustment) by us, ensuring it is firm and does not rattle. *Adjusting the kozuka and kogai slots in the tsuba will allow for smooth attachment and detachment of these accessories.

Bare weight: 631 grams. Weight with koshirae: 913 grams.
