Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Sue Seki 末関 NBTHK HOZON TOKEN Certificate

末関 refers to a collective term for Mino swordsmiths who were active during the Sue-Koto period in the latter part of the Muromachi period. During the Sengoku period, Mino swordsmiths flourished, surpassing even Bizen in prominence, and produced renowned craftsmen such as Kanemoto and Kanetsugu. Their swords were reputed for their sharp cutting ability and were highly popular among warriors.

Though this sword has been significantly shortened, it retains a beautiful form. The width difference between the base and the tip is gracefully proportioned, and the kissaki is slightly extended. Although it does not have an individual signature, its craftsmanship is typical of Sue-Seki, which any sword enthusiast would recognize. The jigane is well-forged with a mix of ko-itame and mokume, incorporating chikei. Unlike many Sue-Seki works that often exhibit whitish and prominent hada, this piece is more subdued and beautifully executed. The hamon is suguha with elements of notare and gunome, displaying the characteristic pointed shapes of Mino-den. The ha shows fine sunagashi and kinsuji, and the boshi is straight with a rounded return, slightly swept back at the tip.

This sword has been newly polished by our shop, allowing you to appreciate the fresh and refined appearance of Sue-Seki's distinct hada and hamon.

The accompanying Type 98 Army sword koshirae is a high-quality piece with a thicker tsuba than usual. Originally a Type 94 with two suspension rings, one ring has been removed. It appears to have been owned by an officer named Kiyohara, as indicated by the name inscribed on all the fittings and the tsuka.

Bare weight: 611 grams. Weight with koshirae: 1,074 grams.
