Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Shitahara 下原 NBTHK HOZON TŌKEN Certificate

The Bushu Shimohara School originated with Yamamoto Kaneju, who lived in present-day Hachioji, Tokyo, around the Eisho period. This school flourished through the late Edo period, centered on ten families of the Yamamoto clan. Notably, the smiths Hiroshige, Kaneju, Yasuju, and Teruju are renowned for their characteristic "Uzumaki-hada" (whirlpool-like grain) on their blades.

This sword, though slender and elegant, has an extended and powerful kissaki. The jigane is well-forged with a tight itame-hada that shows grain and chikei. The hamon is a suguha with slight gunome and ko-notare, with ashi, kinsuji, and inazuma visible in the ha. The boshi on the omote side is suguha with slight irregularities and a kaen-like shape, while the ura side has a suguha with slight notare and ends in a round kaeri.

The koshirae has some slight play in the tsuka and minor tsuba rattling, both easily repairable. The balance is good with a center of gravity near the hands when drawn.

Naked weight: 561 grams. Weight with koshirae: 797 grams.
