Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Shikkake 尻懸 NBTHK TOKUBETSU HOZON TOKEN Certificate

尻懸派, one of the five major schools of Yamato (along with 当麻, 保昌, 手掻, and 千手院), flourished in the region of Shikake, located in Kishida Town, Tenri City, Nara Prefecture. The name "Shikake" is derived from the square stone platform (尻懸石) used by the mikoshi of Yamato Shrine to rest. The de facto founder of the Shikake school is considered to be 則長, believed to be the son of 則弘. His works include one inscribed with "48 years of age in Bunpo 3rd year (1319)" and another with "69 years of age in Ryakuo 3rd year (1340)," suggesting his birth year as Bun'ei 9 (1272).

During this period, many Yamato swords featured exceptionally refined steel. Characteristics of the Shikake school include a high shinogi (ridge), wide shinogi-ji (flat area of the blade), flowing itame hada (wood grain pattern), and a hamon (temper line) that is primarily suguha (straight) with occasional small gunome (circular patterns).

Although this sword has been significantly suriage (shortened), it still retains a robust and healthy appearance. The kitae (forging) shows a well-forged and slightly standing grain with a straight utsuri (shadow pattern). The hamon is a bright, clear suguha with slight variations, incorporating small ashi (legs) and forming small gunome. The blade is richly decorated with sunagashi (sand-like lines) and features reminiscent of uchinoke (brush strokes). The boshi (tip of the blade) retains a wide yakiba (hardened edge) in excellent condition.

This sword is highly recommended for Juyo Token (Important Sword) appraisal.

Bare weight: 830 grams.
