Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Owariseki 尾張関 NBTHK HOZON TOKEN Certificate

The Owari Seki school, a prosperous faction that relocated from Mino Province to Owari Province, is renowned for smiths such as Sagami no Kami Masatsune, Shinano no Kami Daido, Hida no Kami Ujifusa, and Hoki no Kami Nobutaka.

This sword features a mokume hada with itame and masame, creating a striking grain pattern with chikei, and a bright and clear nioiguchi in a gunome-midare hamon. The blade's edge has large nie particles, with the omote side displaying an angular gunome-midare, reminiscent of Kanetomo and Kanefusa, while the ura side features a Kanefusa-style gunome-midare. The distinctive angular blade structure and large nie particles are characteristic of Nobutaka's work.

The koshirae is in excellent condition with no noticeable dents on the saya. The kashira is crafted from horn with a kaeshizuno, suggesting it was part of a daisho set. The fittings, adorned with plant motifs, are meticulously crafted, especially the fine nanako on the fuchigashira, which bear the signature "Kazumasa." The menuki are large and fitting for the sword, while the tsuba is signed "Kinai" with his signature hollyhock design. The habaki and seppa have been replaced due to noticeable damage, but the rest remains original, with the underside of the fuchigashira inscribed with text partially decipherable as "No. 13 Koshirae ... gold ... used by Ono ... black thread."

Given the sword's high-quality koshirae and the ownership of over thirteen blades during a period when townspeople thrived and samurai were impoverished, it is likely that this sword belonged to a relative of the Owari Tokugawa family. *Note: The silver habaki was newly made for the koshirae, leaving a slight gap when fitted to the shirasaya.*

Bare weight: 679 grams. Weight with koshirae: 967 grams.
