Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Katsumura Norikatsu 勝村徳勝 NBTHK HOZON TOKEN Certificate

Katsumura Norikatsu was born in 水戸 (Mito) in 文化六年 (Bunka 6, 1809), commonly known as 彦六 (Hikoro). Initially, he learned the art of sword forging from 関内徳宗 (Sekinai Tokumune), a swordsmith for the 水戸藩 (Mito Domain). In 嘉永五年 (Kaei 5, 1852), under the order of the domain, he went to 江戸 (Edo) accompanied by his disciple, the first-generation 正勝 (Masakatsu), to study under 細川正義 (Hosokawa Masayoshi) and 運寿是一 (Unju Korekazu). During the 文久 (Bunkyu) era, he moved to the 水戸藩邸 (Mito Domain residence) in 小石川 (Koishikawa), 江戸 (Edo), and left behind numerous works. It is said that he passed away at the age of 64 on 二月二十九日 (February 29), 明治五年 (Meiji 5, 1872). His works are characterized by thick, long, and magnificent blades, with a 直刃調 (suguha) on 柾目肌 (masame hada). The blades often feature unraveling edges, 砂流 (sunagashi), and 沸 (nie) on both the 地鉄 (blade steel) and the 刃文 (hamon). The 帽子 (boshi) has a sweeping style, reflecting the 大和 (Yamato) spirit, showcasing his unique craftsmanship.

This 刀 (sword), originally long and grand, has been significantly shortened. However, it retains a well-proportioned width difference between the base and tip. The blade features a double groove (刀樋) on both sides, with a well-forged 柾目肌 (masame hada) and tightly packed 沸 (nie). The blade's edge has multiple layers of 砂流 (sunagashi), long 金筋 (kinsuji), and intense 沸 (nie) extending towards the flat areas of the blade, creating a double and triple 刃文 (hamon) with patterns resembling hot water runs. The 帽子 (boshi) on both sides sweeps back in a flame-like return. These features fully exhibit 徳勝 (Tokukatsu)'s distinctive style, making this sword a quintessential example of his work.

Bare weight: 711 grams.
