Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Yamon Naokatsu 弥門直勝 NBTHK HOZON TOKEN Certificate

The son of the first-generation Jirotaro Naokatsu, who was a prominent disciple of Taikei Naotane, was born in Tenpo 6 (1835). He initially signed his works as Naoyoshi, but from Bunkyu 2 (1862), he began signing as Naokatsu. He lived in Shitaya, Edo, and passed away at the age of 50 on March 31, Meiji 17 (1884).

This sword features a finely forged ko-itame hada with densely packed ji-nie, intricately entering chikei. The hamon is bright and clear, wide, and flamboyantly undulates with elements of gunome, choji, and kaku-gunome, interspersed with long ashi, saka-ashi, and yo. The hamon is deep with kinsuji, nie-suji, and sunagashi appearing prominently, making both the ji and ha remarkably bright and clear.

Though the sword is heavily suriage (shortened), imagining its original ubu form, one can picture a deeply curved, elegant, and powerful shape modeled after old tachi. It is rare to acquire a Naokatsu with ubu-nakago and dated inscriptions on the ura, but as an o-suriage mumei piece, it is more accessible for collection. This sword is ideal for connoisseurs who appreciate the craftsmanship beyond the signature. Its balance is excellent, making it suitable even for women or young boys as a practical sword. Don’t miss the opportunity to acquire this piece.

The accompanying koshirae was newly crafted under the supervision of the shop owner, Machii Isao. The tsuba is relatively thin, and an extra seppa is included in case the owner wishes to change the tsuba in the future.

Bare weight: 568 grams. Weight with koshirae: 806 grams.
