Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Matsuba Motoyuki / Hiroga 松葉本行 / 廣賀 NBTHK HOZON TOKEN Certificate /NBTHK TOKUBETSU KICHO TOKEN Certificate

Originally from Bungo Province, he initially signed his works as Yukiharu and later changed it to Yukihira, claiming descent from Yukiyuki. During the Enpō era, he moved to Karatsu, and later came to Edo in Musashi Province, residing in Azabu and Takanawa. He also studied under Tsunahiro in Sagami, and then returned to live in Karatsu. He received the character "Hon" from the Hon'ami family and changed his name to Hon'yuki. In his later years, he was called Bungo Tarō, and because he inscribed the character "Hon" in a manner resembling pine needles, he became widely known as Matsuba Hon'yuki, a highly regarded swordsmith.

The Hiroga school is represented by the master swordsmiths of Hōki Province and split into the Doso-o and Mita families. The Doso-o family crafted swords in Kurayoshi's Kajimachi from the Bunmei era of the Muromachi period through the Edo period, while the Mita family began with Gorōzaemon no Jō Hiroga, a pupil of Sagami's Tsunahiro during the Tenbun era, and continued through several generations into the early Edo period. Both families flourished greatly.

This sword was originally appraised by Dr. Sato Kanzan as a work by Hiroga of the Sue-Koto period, but more recent examination by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai reclassified it as a work by Matsuba Hon'yuki from the mid-Edo period, around the Genroku era. Considering the balance and appearance when held, it is reasonable to view it as a work from the Edo period. The blade, with its itame-hada and nie, undoubtedly follows the traditions of the Sue-Soshu school.

The blade displays sunagashi throughout, with gunome heads resembling flames, and its intricate and vigorous hamon pattern is full of vitality and never tires the eye. This unique piece, acquired from a household in Fukushima Prefecture, is being presented to the market for the first time.

Bare weight: 726 grams.
