Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Monju 文珠 NBTHK HOZON TOKEN Certificate

Monju refers to a school of swordsmiths from Kii province, active around the early Edo period, which is part of the Yamato Tegai tradition. The first-generation Tegai Kanehisa was given the name Monju Shiro due to his work forging the sword of the bodhisattva Monju. Since then, the Tegai school took on the surname Monju, and the main family succeeded the name Monju Shiro for generations.

From this school, Nan-ki Shigekuni also emerged. While flashy hamon typical of the Shinto period were popular during this era, the Monju school left behind many refined works that adhered to the Yamato tradition.

This sword features a wide difference in width between the base and the tip, a shallow curve, and a typical Kanbun Shinto style with a chukissaki. The steel is well-forged with a fine itame and slightly visible hada, incorporating ji-nie, and bright suguha hamon. The boshi is straight with a rounded tip and extends long on both sides.

There are no notable flaws or defects, and this blade has been polished for appreciation by our shop, allowing you to enjoy the fresh brilliance of the polished steel without any additional work.

The accompanying 九八式陸軍刀拵 (98-type Army sword koshirae) features an iron scabbard, with the gilding on the tsuba and menuki in good condition. The matching serial number '69' is complete. The handle wrap was replaced by our shop due to damage.

Bare weight: 598 grams. Weight with koshirae and scabbard: 987 grams.
