Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Nioh Masakiyo 二王方清 NBTHK HOZON TOKEN Certificate

The Suo Province Nioh school is said to have begun with Kiyomasa or Kiyohira around the Hōen period, although no definitive works have been confirmed. Today, Kiyotsuna is considered its de facto founder. Among Kiyotsuna's extant works, there is a tachi with the inscription "Bunei 2nd year March, Kiyotsuna" housed at Itsukushima Shrine, and a tantō dated Kenmu 2nd year with the inscription "Bōshū Kuga no Shō Kiyotsuna." The name Kiyotsuna continued to be used until the Muromachi period.

Suo Province had many temple estates such as Tōdaiji, and the strong Yamato influence in the Nioh school's style is thought to be due to interactions with the Yamato region. The origin of the Nioh name is attributed to various stories, the most accepted being that during a fire at the Nioh Hall in Suo Province, Kiyotsuna cut through the chains securing the Nioh statues with his tachi, saving them.

This sword is judged to be the work of Katasei, who was active around the Kanbun period in the early Edo era. From its style, it is likely a piece by the first generation. It features well-forged ko-itame hada with chikei and a bright, nioi-based suguha hamon. Though it may appear as a simple suguha at first glance, a closer look reveals its intricate details. The blade, with a slightly slender and long nakago, feels lighter than its actual weight, making it suitable for one-handed use in iai practice.

While the sword currently has an old polish, it does not hinder appreciation of the blade. There are minor nicks visible in some areas. The accompanying koshirae is from the Edo period, featuring a tsuka with large parent same (ray skin nodules), plain fittings with hira-zogan (flat inlay), and a robust iron tsuba designed to easily intercept an opponent's blade.

Upon acquisition, the saya had some scratches and small dents, which have been refinished by our shop. The sword is pleasant to use for iai practice and for appreciation. Due to the fit of the habaki, the effective blade length is about 5mm longer than stated, making it approximately 71.76 cm. Please contact us if you wish to have the nicks removed and the blade re-polished (additional cost required).

Bare weight: 735 grams. Weight with koshirae: 1,028 grams.
