Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Musashi Daijo Korekazu 武蔵大掾是一 NTHK Kanteisho Certificate

武蔵大掾是一 (Musashi Daijo Korekazu), also known as 川上左近 (Kawakami Sakon), was born in 近江国蒲生郡石堂村 (Ishido Village, Gamo District, Omi Province) and belonged to the 近江石堂 (Omi Ishido) school. Later, he moved to Edo and became the founder of the Edo Ishido school. Along with 出羽守光平 (Dewa no Kami Mitsuhira) and 対馬守常光 (Tsushima no Kami Tsunemitsu), he greatly elevated the reputation of Edo Ishido. From the Korekazu school came 是次 (Koretsugu), who founded the Fukuoka Ishido school.

Korekazu's style was modeled after the 備前一文字 (Bizen Ichimonji) school of the Kamakura period, excelling in choji-midare hamon. Unlike the older works, his pieces often featured masame hada in the steel, blade, and shinogi. The distinction between the first and second generations is relatively straightforward: the first generation cuts the third stroke of the kanji “是” (Kore) from the lower right to the upper left, while the second generation cuts it horizontally from right to left.

The Korekazu lineage continued until the end of the Edo period, with 運寿是一 (Unju Korekazu) as the seventh generation successor.

This sword, despite being greatly shortened (大磨上), retains a solid blade length and features the typical shallow curvature of the Kanbun Shinto style. The steel has a well-forged, densely packed ko-itame hada with overall masame, some areas showing flowing patterns. The hamon is a gentle ko-midare with gunome-choji, well-formed ashi, fine sunagashi, and occasional large nie along the blade edge. The boshi is straight with a rounded return.

The accompanying koshirae is sturdy with no looseness in the hilt, tsuba, or seppa, making it suitable for immediate martial use. The balance is towards the hand, providing a comfortable grip suitable for one-handed iaido practice.

Bare weight: 714 grams.
Weight with koshirae and without saya: 965 grams.
