Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Kanetaka 金高 NBTHK HOZON TŌKEN Certificate

This is a large suriage mumei sword, attributed to 美濃金高 (Mino Kanetaka) from the Eiroku period of the late Muromachi era. The sword's broad width, thick kasane, and extended kissaki give it a dignified appearance reminiscent of the grand suriage works of the Nanbokucho period.

At the base, there are carvings of a kusa kurikara-ryu dragon entwined with a sword and bonji, likely as a prayer for victory in battle. This indicates that it was used by a warrior. Despite its imposing appearance, the sword has a balanced feel, with the center of gravity from the hand to the middle, making it easy to handle.

The steel is well-forged with a mixture of ko-itame and mokume, tightly packed. The hamon is mainly gunome-midare, with gunome-choji and pointed elements, ashi, and various changes along the edge, including kinsuji and fine sunagashi. The boshi is chaotic on both sides with a rounded return.

There are some small rust spots that appear white in places, but the blade can still be appreciated in its current state. We offer this at a price considering the cost of polishing, so please request polishing services from our shop.

The tsuba included with the koshirae is signed 若芝 (Wakashiba) and features intricate 3D designs of Azumaya and a bridge pier. The fuchi-gashira has a design of monkeys playing with a rope on polished shakudo, and the menuki depict hollyhocks and plums. The tsuka is wrapped with elegant and well-crafted astringent blue snake belly wrapping. The habaki has the Tosa Kashiwa crest of the Yamauchi family, the daimyo of Kochi, engraved only on the omote side, indicating its prestigious provenance.

Bare weight: 803 grams.
Weight with koshirae and without saya: 1,124 grams.
