Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Tashiro Kanenobu 田代兼信 NBTHK HOZON TOKEN Certificate

Kanenobu is said to be a descendant of the Shizu line that has continued since the Nanbokucho period and was inherited by the Zensho school during the Muromachi period, reaching the Shinto period. The first generation Tashiro (Tajo) Kanenobu, who received the title of Yamato no Kami, was commonly known as Genichiro and was also called "Genichi Yamato" by the public. He was a master craftsman representing Mino during the Shinto period and is sometimes believed to be the same person as Genichi Kanemoto. The second-generation Kanenobu (Kakubei) continued the same style, creating Sanbonsugi patterns. From the second generation onwards, the tang's tip tends to be slightly rounded, forming a chestnut shape. Among the generations of Kanenobu, the first generation is particularly popular, and swords inscribed with the Yamato no Kami title are rare.

This sword is distinct from the ostentatious, pointed Sanbonsugi often seen in the market. It features a rounded gunome-choji forming the Sanbonsugi pattern, interspersed with gunome-choji midare, and angled gunome approximately 45 degrees. The well-forged mokume hada with nie gives it an exquisite finish, with a bright and clear nioiguchi, well-defined ashi, and fine sunagashi visible within the hamon, making it a highly valuable artistic piece.

The accompanying half-tachi koshirae is in extremely good condition, with fittings signed by Bushu resident Masayuki, showing very meticulous craftsmanship. If there is a flaw to point out, it is that the kurikata, which was likely originally made of metal with the same design, has been lost and replaced with one made of water buffalo horn.

Don't miss the opportunity to add this highly artistic work by Kanenobu to your collection.

Bare weight: 648 grams.
Weight with koshirae: 938 grams.
