Description

Authentic Nihontō Japanese Sword Katana Attributed to Enju 延寿 NBTHK HOZON TOKEN Certificate

The Enju school of swordsmiths from Higo Province traces its origins to Enju Taro Kunimura, believed to be the grandson of Rai Kunikiyo. This school flourished in the Kikuchi District of the same province from the late Kamakura period through the Nanbokucho period. The Enju school produced many renowned swordsmiths, including Kunisuke, Kunitoki, Kunitaka, and Kuniyoshi. These craftsmen are collectively known as the Enju school, and their works, bearing dates of the Southern Court, align with the tradition of being employed by the Kikuchi clan (Southern Court faction). The name Enju, meaning "prolonging life," was highly esteemed and often exchanged among samurai families as a symbol of longevity, similar to the Seki school's longevity.

Despite being heavily shortened, this sword maintains a robust presence with an extended kissaki. The kitae (forging pattern) features small itame hada with fine ji-nie and a prominent utsuri. The hamon, with a soft, floating feel, combines elements of a tight nioiguchi, small ashi, and slight midare, showing rich activity intertwined with the steel. The boshi is straight and ends in a rounded tip.

While the blade shows minor flaws and coarse areas due to its 700-year history, it retains its majestic form. The current condition reveals some light rust, but the blade is still appreciable. We recommend polishing to enhance the clarity of the blade.

Bare weight: 537 grams.
